Our Lukas, pictured winning at Eagle Farm, won Sunday's Listed Seymour Cup (1600m).
Our Lukas added another provincial cup to his record by winning Sunday’s $123,000 Listed Darley Seymour Cup (1600m).
The dual Ipswich Cup (2150m) winner settled in third position and then took his time to overhaul pacemaker Conquering, grabbing the lead inside the final 50 metres.
Trained by Robert Heathcote, Our Lukas ($5.50-$7-$6.50) defeated Conquering ($9-$10) by a long neck with Red Colossus ($3.70-$3.40-$3.70 fav) finishing strongly down the outside a further short neck away.
Rock Kingdom ($4.20-$5-$4.40) showed a glimpse of the form which saw him win last year’s Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) with a close-up fourth, beaten under three-quarters of a length from the winner.
Rider Danny Nikolic was having his first ride aboard Our Lukas and gave praise for the determination in which the seven-year-old gelding attacked the line.
“It’s great to win the main race of the year at this track,” he said before adding, “He's a good honest horse.”
“Rob (Heathcote) said he could be a little tardy out of the barriers and he definitely wanted me to be in the first three and four if I could be there.
“He actually jumped OK and I got a nice bit of cover behind the leader (Conquering).
“When I sort of got the split on the turn he put pay to them pretty good.
“He’s not sort of brilliant in any way that he can find two or three lengths but instead he just keeps coming.
“If he gets the right run, he’ll always be hard to beat in this sort of class,” he added.
Our Lukas will now be trying to emulate the feats of Stamen in 2004 who after winning the Seymour Cup, won the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes – now known as the Bundaberg Distilling Company Stakes (1800m) at Listed level on Melbourne Cup Day.
Our Lukas has raced forty times for 12 wins and nine placing’s with prize money now beyond $600,000.
