Heathcote Pair To Miss Spring
Solzhenitsyn and Tomboy won't be part of trainer Rob Heathcote's spring team in Melbourne this year but both are destined for bigger things.Heathcote, who won his third straight trainers' premiership last season, declared both were serious racehorses with bright futures after they gave him a winning double at Doomben on Saturday.
Solzhenitsyn made it three straight wins with a narrow but tough victory over Eastline in the Micropower Integrated Business Solutions Handicap (1350m) while Tomboy easily won the Savills Industrial Property Handicap (1630m).
"I've said all along Solzhenitsyn was a serious racehorse and I think he's been racing short of what may prove his best distance," Heathcote said. "He'll be going to the paddock on Monday for a well earned rest and won't be going interstate with some of my others for the spring. The timing hasn’t worked out with the winter carnival here but maybe next year”?
"He'll probably come back in time for the Doomben summer series."
The Doomben summer series begins with the G3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Doomben followed by the Listed Doomben Stakes (1350m) and Listed Bernborough Handicap (1615m).
"The Bernborough will be the race that will really suit him next campaign but he'll probably run in the other two races as well," Heathcote said.
Solzhenitsyn showed a touch of class in the manner in which he overcame being trapped wide and carrying a big weight before going on to score by a neck over Eastline.
Tomboy looked a mare well above average after she trounced River Perfume by 2-1/4 lengths.
"That was the real Tomboy," Heathcote said.
"She had no luck when she was beaten at Eagle Farm start and it was a big effort to step up to 1600 metres and win so well. She never looked in doubt during the run”.
"I know she's by Murphy's Blu Boy but I'm sure she'll eventually get 2000 metres if that is needed later in her career.
"She's out of a Jeune mare and the staying lines may well be coming coming from there."
